Just a quick update. We have successfully arrived in NB. I'm settled down at Di's computer, and nicking her pictures already for our funky postcards. Trip = just over 14 hours, including a couple of "East?" - "No, West" - "No, East, East, EAST!" and "look at that shiny building. Oh crap was that our exit?!?" detours. Back tracked daily updates soon... think... dates in rum...

For those waiting for me, or tracking my progress. In order to ensure the car is in tip top shape, Travel plans to NB have been rescheduled.
Departure - Friday morning [changed from Thursday morning] Arrival - Friday night A nice result of this is I don't have to find someone to do my Apprentice Blog update for me.
Peter has been reading up on Saint John and is interested in seeing the Reversing Falls & the "Chute". I've never heard of the "chute". But I expect that Di knows what it is. I'm still interested in seeing how we are going to hook his snowboard up in place of the dogsled. If we can make it work, it will be a feat of engineering. And highly amusing too!

Into town with M of M&V, nattering all the way. Walked into the
Roasted Cherry with high expectations for my wireless experience. My hopes were dashed. However it did prove, without a doubt that the problem is with the configuration of my laptop's networking.
Not that this information solves anything. I no longer have "people who do that"... and I get by on luck, magic and occasional big brown eye bats. Lunch @ Dunn's for the Super Smoked Meat Sandwich Combo ($8.99) where the hostess was harsh and rude again. Last time I was here, she spent my entire visit haranguing my waiter. She bullied and corrected him loudly and repeated until the entire restaurant was cringing. It was his first Saturday shift, so perhaps it is the training routine, or he really was that inept. Either way it was damned uncomfortable to sit through. I almost abandoned my meal.
But the food is good, the prices are good and the service is quick and
attentive. Then again what choice do they have? M met me at Dunn's & took the laptop home to very successfully hook it into his network. Wireless still not working, but have I mentioned how much I appreciate M's help. He Rocks!
Meanwhile, on Sparks Street, I was meeting my writers at D'Arcy Magee's. In the background Rick Mercer was interviewing Jack Layton. Yes, THAT Rick Mercer of The Monday Report and "Ontario A Place To Grow." Which, oddly enough was one of the many things I nattered at M about this morning. Well, I ambushed Rick Mercer after Jack left, and our friend Rick, BTW he's now our friend whether he knows it or not, gave me a recommendation. He was nice, helpful and we like him even more now! He is now our 4th CEOT Celebrity - along with Mike Bullard, Karen Solomon, and Doc & Woody. Happy Days.

Lost in suburbia. Trip and twist your ankle. Walk to far. Squint at curving streets looping around artfully leading you back where you began - or is it? Is that the cul-de-sac I'm looking for? Lost in suburbia again. For the second time in as many continents.
A woman stopped me on the street to ask if I was lost. Sadly it was 20 minutes before I was lost. When I was actually lost, and finally able to find someone to ask for help from, he had no idea where I was going - "All I can tell you is, it's not this way,", he said pointing to his house. Later I found that he was standing not 2 blocks from where I was going. 2 blocks in the direction he told me not to go. 4 blocks in the direction I did go.
Suburbia... the Latin word for Where-The-Hell-Am-I-Now?!?!?!?

Attempting to get my wireless to go again. No idea why it won't or what happened, but I finally realized that dialup was an option. Picked up my email and got the basics covered by 11. Then headed out to explore my new environs. Checked out V's short cut, which spat me out in what looked like the midst of nowhere. Turned out to be directly between 2 strip malls. Should I turn left or should I turn right? Left it is, for now.
I spent my day wander through strip malls where I became the archetypical mild aged, lonely woman. You know the one. She shlumps around looking confused. Talking too much, too long and too loudly at sales people. Never buying a thing, but picking up everything in every
store. Spilling her drink and then apologizing way too much to the person cleaning it up. You've seen her. I've been her.

We left downtown Toronto at 10am-ish... heading up to Bayview & Sheppard where Peter attended service at The People's Church. Heathen that I am - I stayed in the car and worked. On Hycrest @ Sheppard there are 3 WIFI networks, so this was almost posted from there... but I got caught up in finding an appropriate postcard "front" and the battery on my laptop died. Back on the road around 1:30pm.
Stopped at a Wendy's/Tim Horton's along the 401 to test out BoldStreet Wireless on Peter's laptop. No success - not sure why.
Arrive safely @ M&V's in Barrhaven around 8pm. Settled in nicely and started mucking with technology. Currently dial up is the only working solution - so this postcard is short if not sweet.
