One of the cool things we ended up doing this weekend with Rockr & Junkii was hitting the Pacific Mall. We've gotten lots and LOTs and LOTS of recommendations for the food there and we'd just been aching to sample what's available. The food available covers most of the traditional Asian cuisines and when you reach the second floor it's hard to miss the smell of fresh waffles wafting down the narrow aisles.
After cruising all the restaurants, food kiosks and vendors in the food court, everyone except Stephen ended up in front of Sun's Kitchen ordering one of their noodle soups. The noodles are made to order and with the smack-smack-smack sound of the noodles being stretched, and the guy across the aisle playing tunes on his small pipes, it really attracts a crowd.
If you listen carefully you'll heard Rockr doing a quiet voice over describing where we are. You can also hear Gerry suggesting that we try noodle-making in lieu of fighting, and at other points you can hear us ordering our spring rolls and pan fried dumplings. The noodle soups are definitely the way to go here.
Next time, I'll take a video of the Dragon's Beard Candy being made. Same approach but it results in thousands of tiny strands of candy thread which are then wrapped around peanut, coconut and sesame seeds. (photos soon)
There's a new, chewable nanotechnology that lets you take photos with your eyes, cures cancer and eliminates body odour. But the early adopters are realizing they got extra "features" they didn't count on. And no one told them once they spread through the bloodstream, it's harder to uninstall than your average computer virus.
INFEST WISELY is a feature length movie written by novelist Jim Munroe in seven episodes, each with different directors. With a cameo by ME as the surly restaurant diner.
Infest Wisely is being released for free download on the internet and podcast starting May 22th. "It was free to make, so it's free to watch," says Munroe, who has also released his novels under a Creative Commons license for free download.
But the first people who will see the movie will be attendees of their "Infestor's Meeting" at Innis Town Hall on Friday, May 18th at 7pm. "It's not as exclusive as it sounds. For $5 you can be a 'Key Infestor'," says Munroe with a grin. "And really it's a way for people to support the project -- the money is going to pay for the fees to apply to festivals all over the world."
The sponsorship money will fund a pressing of the DVD, to which the directors will add their DIY movie making commentary. "Hopefully we'll see more and more people realizing that making indie movies is more achievable now than it has ever been,"Munroe says. "And if word about it spreads half as fast as blood-borne nanotechnology, we'll be dominating the world in no time!"
This movie rocks! And, yes, that is a professional critic's opinion. Of course, my area of expertise isn't movies... but phht, who cares?
I like movies. I like Colm Feore. I like hot Québécois. I like bilingualism. And I can live with hockey if I have to especially for the hot Québécois!
Bon Cop Bad Cop is a standard buddy cop movie set in Montreal and Toronto and played out in both official languages. The cultural stereotypes play nicely into the standard buddy-cop structure - break-the-rules-get-r-done cop partnered with play-it-by-the-book cop. They work together, have a couple of scraps and scrapes, and both learn to respect each other... blah blah blah.
It's not the cookie-cutter structure that sucks you in. It's not really even the hot québécois. It's the intensity of the performances and writing which body checks you. From the open hostility for the mauvais anglais to the intense emotional protectiveness of both fathers anglo or québécois. You don't doubt the humanity of these characters. (did I just write "humanity" in a post?!? Oh god, someone hand me another beer!)
